tavertine mosaic tiles- when to seal

Greetings all
i’m going to be tiling a backsplash with some tavertine tiles. I know i need to seal them but is it easier to do it before i fix them or after????
also has anyone got any great ideas on ways to cut the sheets??

Definetly easier to do prior to installation, however doing so may comprimise the bond of the grout. This really isn't an issue for a backsplash though. Not exactly a high traffic area.
Just be sure to keep the backs of the tiles from becoming sealed. You do want the thinset to bond quite well.

thanks!!
Even though it's easier, I always seal after they're up. that way you hit the grout as well. Get a good spry bottle.
It seems to be a personal preference with the guys on another tile site.
I just finished doing a tumbled floor, counter top and tub deck. I sealed after grouting. What I noticed is that the grout color slightly stained the surface of the tile because it is so porous. It doesn't look bad, but I can seeit , though no one else will notice.
next time, it's seal first. Just don't flood the surface, just lightly coat the surface and try not getting it down the sides and edges. Not to hard to do, just another step
I used the "Miracle" products. The one I was used the the sealer and enhancer, all in one. They have a few of them so becareful to not get the one that has to be stripped before recoating. The product is being discontinued , but is still on the shelf at my local home depot. Also, if you want to enhance the stone, don't first use a plain sealer like the 511, Use the sealer/enhancer combination product
I agree with migraine. Apply a light coat of sealer to the face of the tiles before grouting. It makes it easier to wipe off the grout, and prevents staining. Then after the grout cures for a week, apply a heavy coat of sealer. And it is important to seal the backsplash tiles, to keep the spaghetti sauce from staining.
As to cutting the tiles, what size are they? "Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
the sheets are 1' square and the indivivdual tiles are 1" square
i've done the layout to minimalise any cuts but there are going to be a few
I usually cut the mesh and install the sheet around area where tiles will need to be cut. Then just cut the tiles individually with a tile cutter or nipper as required.
