Well, the tear off has begun and as luck would have it..I failed to REALLY look at this roof..I mean, yeah..wood shakes..gonna be hot, messy etc.
What I did not see is that the HO put up these OAK shakes many yrs. ago, with AT LEAST 6 8D and 10D nails each..
I like to use a pitchfork for ripping off cedar..but even with all the rot, it took a ‘tater fork and lots of prying..I mean rusted nails locked to the ply..
The best part so far is the great view, and the fact that I can bill extra for all the sheathing that is shot..there is NO shade, and we are 15 plus degrees above “Normal”..what ever is normal for Central KY in May..
heres some shots of the fuzzy bugger and ya might be able to see the nail pattern in the one pic.
Shingles oughta be here Mon. so for now, just rippen and cussin.

That's one rough lookin' roof! What's the replacement gonna be? Maybe you could use/sell the tear-off stuff as fire wood/ kinlin' wood. If it's oak, that stuff would nearly burn via spontaneous combustion!
Look at the bright side - your gonna have a hell of a sun tan... BTW - I thought you were a building inspector now... maybe that was someone else...
gonna get cedar blue lable perfections..
almost set it on fire with a cigarette..
And no, I am not a buildin inspector (for a living) tho' I did jump through all the hoops in NC for home inspector..woulda had to "ride" with a licensed one for 6 mos. to get "legal"
FREE KINDLIN..all oak some nails...you haul.

I just climbed off my roof wood shinglin' it and I was drenched it was so hot up there.
Looks like we're in the same dream.
At least I should have a good night if I don't fall asleep first.
Off to see Charlie Musslewhite at a club in town with "bear".
And then I have to be up at 6AM to get on the roof again tomorrow?
Does this mean I can't drink tonight? Nahhhhhhh lol
Be MAXed out

About 20 years back, it once took me and a helper 2 1/2 days to do a two car garage roof ( Go-over ). No Lie! I hadn't figured on the topless Go-Go girls layin' down below by the pool. Still don't consider that job a loss.
What, no job pictures you can share?
I hadn't figured on the topless Go-Go girls layin' down below by the pool.
Same thing happened to me, we were working on a building next to a strip club. As the building grew we could see over the high railing on the deck behind the bar... 3 of us hollered a hearty Good-Morning to the Ladies.....who stood up, waved and invited us over for lunch....God bless em....not a tan-line in the bunch.
The miserable old guy we worked for finished the top plate on the south wall hisself......took him 2 days...Gord
OOOOOOOO-eeeeeee! That's ugly!
Bro, I can't think of a single way better than what you described to get those puppies off there--except maybe using a John Deere 490D and a very good operator, LOL.
Bet you're gonna be tan and muscular at the end of this one and the gals'll be all over you. (Hope like heck you're charging by the hour so's you'll have some money to spend on 'em....)
No, seriously--the only thing I can suggest is maybe to weld a piece of 1½x1½ angle iron across the back of a flat shovel about 3 or 4 inches back from the end of the blade so you'll have a fulcrum closer to the load end than on a standard roof-stripping shovel. And if you don't already have one, get yerself a hammer with an axe-handle; it'll make all the diff in how your forearms feel at the end of the day after pulling all the nails whose heads just pop through the shingles.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
BTW--here's a pic of a tear-off where I actually did use a 490D....

ah, great minds and all that..I did weld a chunk of 1'' square steel tube to the back of the tines on the diggin fork..just like a roof ripping shovel..after the first attempts.
using a 2' crowbar for pullin the stuck nails ( less bending over)..
now about that hoe...lol

Yeah, that roof did look a bit low-slope. What is it: 3 or 4 in 12, about?
I actually thought about a hoe--but I think you'd need to custom make an exta heavy-duty one with a big flat spot on the back for a kick plate to shove it under the shingle.
Funny how much roofing work is done with gardening tools. Maybe we should go back to sod roofs....

actually a couple of pitches, main house is 10/12, one dormer 3/12 {not good for cedar} another dormer 12/12, and a bridge at 6/12 and an addition at 12/12..
total of 36 sq...just doin the first 16 for now.
found a small mattock like thing in the wifes garden shed,,has 3 tines opposite a hoe blade all cast steel..it has a mediun axe handle and seems to work well too..oh well, I'm still getting off a little over a sq. in 3 hours..handling it off the roof is another story..

Can you just dump the scrap onto a tarp laid on the ground under the eaves and then drag it to a place where you can burn them on site? Lots less carting to do if all you gotta carry away is the burnt-out nails and a few buckets of ash....Dinosaur

Welcome to my world. ;-) I just finished the tear-off part of my 2-car garage re-roof with a complete removal down to the rafters. Took 3180 lbs of debris to the dump, which consisted of the 18 ft doug fir 1x6 (too many nails in them to bother salvaging or roofing over), a layer of shakes, and 3 layers of asphalt shingles on them, and a layer of moss. 1-1/2" nails on the last job were only pentrating the 1x6 about a 1/4" Surprisingly little damage due to bugs or water considering the condition of the roof in some places.
My tool of choice was a Vaughn superbar. Worst part were the T&G 1x4 on the rake and eave overhangs. I had to pull about 300 #6 finishing nails that didn't come up with the boards. Amazingly I didn't get a single nail stick on my body and only one nail penetrated a boot bottom enough to scratch the ball of my foot. The tire on the wheel-barrow didn't fare as well, and had to be pumped up from the compressor every other trip to the pickup.
I remember complaining about all the roofing debris that was left in my house isulation when they tore off the shakes in a reroof some years back. I have since learned it is pretty hard to take off roofing and not make a huge mess, even with tarps everywhere. My garage is right on the property line and the eaves actually overhang the neighbors yard, so I ended up taking most of the debris off on my side, hence the plywood sheets for material removal. Its amazing how far an 80 yo dried out shake will drift when the wind catches it. The next lawn mowing will be very interesting. =8-O
I feel for you. At some point, some imbecile actually nailed asphalt shingles down through the existing slate shingles on my roof. That is one headache that I do not look forward to dealing with.
Good luck
Just curious -
You don't mention using a shingle spade for tear-off. Do they not work on wood shake roofs?
What was in those Scooby snacks, and why did Shaggy want them too? He WAS the only hippie-looking one in the bunch...
Boss Man...shingle spades work great if two conditions exist..first, Roofing nails, not 10D commons..second, cedar applied with 2 , 4 or 6d box nails , not 10d commons..hence the struggle..

despair? not me..actually can take it easy, got all summer to get it done..they can only afford 3 SQ a month..so thats 5 plus months to finish 16 sq..then start the other 20..(with a cost adjustment!)

well, yes - - ya got diseases and insects to deal with, and you are way late starting - what do you have to apply a spray solution with?"there's enough for everyone"
here ya go she just took these..
I have a little 2.5 gal garden type sprayer..pump it up deal..my neighbor has a tractor rig sittin in the field outback..I might could use that..depends on what I'm sprayin I guess..and if he had Round up in it or not..

congratulations, Shere and Mrs Shere - - you have a tree loaded with 'Fireblight' (Erwinia amylovora), a bacteria -
there is good news and bad news - the good news is you don't have to worry about spraying, there's nothing that cures it - the bad news is it isn't curable -
there are two strategies at this point - one: do nothing, it'll settle down when it gets stinkin' hot - - two: remove the infected teminals, cutting them back a foot below any visible sign of infection, sterilize your pruners with 2% chlorox solution between cuts -
varieties vary in the suceptability and sensitivity to infection - in sensitive varieties, the infection will run right through the tree and kill it, less sensitive varieties will tolerate chronic infection that your tree is alive indicates that it's not particularly sensitive -
of secondary importance, I see leaf roller feeding - the chewed terminals/holes in the leaves - ya could spray with Imidan or Sevin and to stop that - if you spray, add a fungicide (Captan) to keep the foliage/fruit healthy -
and it's gonna take something more than a pump up sprayer to do any good - tool up!
nice view from the orchard..."there's enough for everyone"
yowzaa!! sounds like apple aids..also sounds like firewood.
Got peaches too, can it spread to them?
I'll check with Mike my neighbor, about the big tank sprayer, maybe. Might just go for the pruneing and let them be..I'm not big time into fruit trees, and a lot of other stuff is growing fine..garden is the priority.
Thanx David, you know your apple tree shid, alright.
Oh yeah, good view of the pond from there..cools off tonite, I'm drowning some worms..got Bass as big as my thigh..

You should talk the owner into a thatch roof instead. That way you will be up there for another three months.
Surely they could have gotten another year out of that roof?!?!
there's another 20 sq. for next yr. IF it lasts that long..after todays progress (working on the tie in areas at valleys) it looks like I'll just have to keep on going once the worst is over with..the valleys look like they were at a shooting gallery..he nailed right up to the center in places..

all by my lonesome..but some Mexican labor is lookin pretty good right now..my trailer holds a sq. of tearoff and it don't dump itself..get to handle the naily bastids a fourth time..
peel and pry off, chuck to a valley, chuck into the trailer, and unchuck outta the trailer..too much landscapeing to get the trailer closer, and they wont slide down a chute unless it is REAL steep..spent 80.00$ on cheap Harbor Freight tarps..

At the transfer station 6 yrs. ago - guy comes in with a pick-up loaded with tear-off, hops out, ties a chain to post, pulls forward, load is on the ground (other end of chain was attached to an old truck wheel and tire).
very clever.
I knew a guy in Pa. had a bent frame on his PU...chained it to an oak tree, got in and mashed the pedal...went through the windshield and killed himself.
I'd say the other guy was clever..
I'm gonna modify my trailer to dump..it was a boat trailer, all I have to do is pull out a bolt and replace it with a pin and hairpin clip..it'll pivot on the other tongue bolt.

Back in the VW days, that was the standard way of pulling out a back bumper so you could open the engine compartment again. But not under power, hand pushing was the ticket for accurate repair.

Hi Sphere,
I am just wondering what county you live in. I come down to Hart County several times a year to crawl into holes in the ground. If you have any I could look into them for you.

THERES DADDY"S GIRL..!!! WOW!..and I almost went over the edge..so I went down and told Eddy to scram..and introduced myself..good thing I had my shades on..my eyes were like pie plates..seems she's home for the summer from college..
