Do you want to stay with asphalt or are you considering other options? What colors would you like up there?

I think I'd leave the roof alone and pick a paint color that doesn't clash with the shingles.
Or pick a color so jarring that you didn't notice the roof? <G>

How many squares is it and what's the pitch? I think tear off is usually preferred to two layers on your own house.
As a general rule, I would side with Farmer Dave especially if you do not know the history of your current ugly roof. I have a feeling you did not have the current roof installed, therefore, you do not know what is under those ugly shingles. I would rip it off down to the wood and start fresh after perhaps taking care of any little surprises you find! All potential surprises will not be visible from the underside.
Code here allows up to three layers, after that you have to tear off. Given that it's no more than 7 years old and not leaking, I'd leave it alone. Put the roof money in a CD and earn interest until you really need to replace it.

put black up there and watch your power bill double
Red will draw as much heat as blackbut up here in a heating climate, black goes on most of the roofs

I was bored one time(well more than once, but...)and I was reading an article that said that if the whole country would switch to light colored shingles we would save ......some money.
I don't recall how much savings was mentioned by the this particular study but I'm sure it was enough that I could retire on!

If the light-coloured shingles are the only shingles on the roof at this time, and there is no rot anywhere in the roof deck or trim, you could leave them on and shingle over them.
But you will get a better job and go easier on the frame if you strip it first. And since you will be 'staying in this house till you die,' unless you're already well-advanced in years it's likely you'll have to strip both layers sometime before you shuffle off this mortal coil. So why not strip it now when you're young and full of pep, and then slime off and shingle over in 20 years when your get up and go has got up and went...?
