Earlier this year, Patrick Camus had a two-page article about remodelling his bathroom. He mounted a tempered glass counter atop the sink and braced in on two walls and a glass shower partition.
This simple yet beautiful design seemed perfect for our bathroom which seems to have the same proportions as Mr. Camus’ bathroom except that our entry is to the right of the sink and not across from it.
The contractor of choice for our family is a wily Hungarian with whom I have been doing battle now for six months over the use of tempered glass for a counter. Does anyone have any experience in the use of tempered glass counters; has it cracked, come out of the wall brackets, broken in any way or suffered excessive scratches from daily use? Attached is the article.
Thanks

What is the big deal for the wily Hungarian ? The majority of the weight gets transferred to the sink bowl. Liberal application of silicone caulk in the side and rear slot will hold the glass like all get out. I'm not sure how that angle bracket mounts on the tempered glass shower panel. Either it was laid out and drilled before tempering (that would take some skill) or it's just siliconed on the glass.
Tempered glass does not scratch. It is super hard and super durable. If you hit it hard enough or scratch at it with a sharp object it shatters into many, many mini pieces. This takes one hell of a hard blow.
*The only downside is keeping the thing clean. Especially if you have hard water.
*It is the edge of tempered glass that is vulnerable. Protect it, and you should have no trouble. For info on glass, visit glasswebsite.com. They have links that discuss the strength of tempered glass.
*Exposed edges of tempered glass are an invitation to disaster. If you strike the edge, the glass will explode into a million pieces. Protect the edge or use heat strengthen glass
