In older homes like these, the main remodeling goal is often a more welcoming, more social, and more functional kitchen.

I have seen the guys that take the templates around here use some sort of "plastic"(for lack of a better term) They cut and fit it, make notes on it and roll it up and off they go.
I don't know what the product is, seems to be thick enough so as not to distort, I'm only guessing but something in the neighborhood of 1/40 of an inch. I use that guess because I buy a lot of veneer at 1/42" and I would say its somewhere in that area.
The stuff they use is not crystal clear, more opaque, have no idea what it is but it does seem to do a very good job. Would think that some trade paper or mag would have it advertised it it.
I've taken the templates with the thin strips of ply, it kinda sucks.

I suppose that Mylar or velumn would be a bit expensive, eh?
Paper can stretch or shrink from moisture and folding so it depends how accurate...
Sometimes, I save the waxed backing paper off icce and water shield form roof jobs for things like this - roll it off as I'm installing and save a box of it, as long as there are no wrinkles to distort....

Translucent mylar is what my countertop guys use here.
Bob Thanks for the information were do you purchase translucent mylar. Does it come in a roll. And can it be rolled and placed in a tube to be mailed?
My guys bring it in as a roll, and roll em up after they're cut and marked.
Drafting supply places probably have it. The businesses that sell supplies to the engineering firms.
Or just Google for "translucent mylar film."
You might want to check out Sintra. I discovered the material during the course of fabricating trade show exhibits where it something of a common and standard building. It's essentially sheet PVC plastic that comes in thicknesses of 1mm-13mm and can come in up to 4x8 sheets. Beyond using it for exhibit fabrication we use it all the time for making patterns and templates in our stair, stair railing, and cabinet production since it's tough and sturdy but still flexible and easy to cut.

The art and craft store chain Michael's has the material you want. I don't know the name of it, but a granite counter top by internet site recommended it (don't remember the name of the site either). Go to Michael's and ask around. Go on Tuesdays and get their discount.
