We have the bait/traps around our house as part of a research project for a local university. So far they have identified two distinct colonies and have begun baiting to eradicate. So far I am impressed.

Do not trust Terminix, or any product associated with Terminix.
Bait traps are a good thing in some areas, and not effective in others. The soil has a lot to do with how well the bait traps work.
Find some people in your area who are currently using the bait traps, and find out how effective they are in your area.
Just a thought...

*Just completed a continuing seminar with the head entymologist of the Termite and Mosquito Commission in New Orleans. Signed up by accident.Sentricon bait traps, according to him, are effectively helping to combat the Formosan termite in New Orleans, one of its strongholds. I was impressed with what he had to report - the bait has no negative odor or taste to termites so they don't avoid it as they do some poisons. It's pretty expensive, though. All second hand, of course, but from the 'battlefront.'
*What if you use these around your house as a preventive measure. Couldn't they cause you to have termite problems? The term 'bait' leads me to believe that termites are atracted to this stuff.

Bait is correct. They are attracted to it, eat it and carry it back to the queen. Unbeknownst to them it is poisoned. Very soon, no more termites.
*According to an exterminator/customer of mine, when the Centricon spikes are placed in the ground around the house, each one contains a non-poisonous "bait" (wood). They're monitored on a monthly basis, and if termites are found feeding at a spike, the wood plug is replaced with a "feeding tube" which delivers a termite edible poison that they bring to the nest and feed to everyone, killing the colony (in theory).Evidently, if you only put out poisonous bait, you might never know that the suckers are even present.According to this guy, the chemical barriers applied in trenches around infested homes almost always fail after a few months.

We had them done at our home about 2 or 3 years ago, and so far we have had a few "hits" on some bait stations. Shortly after they swiched to the poison bait the activity quit, so maybe we got them. The decision wes pretty easy for me, as the cost really wasn't much more than "drill and treat" for my slab. So far no more termites. If I had a crawlspace foundation I wouldn't even think about it though. One thing that helped out decision was that this system also passes for a termite inspection when you sell your home, something we knew we would be doing soon.
