Our company admin requested that we attend a drywall seminar held by a contractor. During the intermission, I asked him for his feedback on the approach we used on a recent job.
When faced with installing 5/8″ greenboard on 24 oc joists, we ran beads of PL premium construction adhesive down each joist, raised the sheets into place, and fastened with screws every 12″. He responded that the proper approach would have been to install RC (as in resilient channel???) across the joists every 12″ and screw into that. No mention of adhesive.
I’ve read elsewhere that greenboard is not approved for ceiling installations, but we’re all going to do it at some point. What should we be doing?

He was right.
green board will work on a cieling but the span has to be reduced.
channels or strapping(1x furring) will do this.
The reason is that the MR treatment makes the gypsum heavier and also more flexible so on a ceiling it will sag if not properly supported.

Do not try this at home!

Framing should not exceed 16" OC, but screw layout should fall at about 6" - 8" spacing.....I double screw my ceilings regardless of MR or not.
