   White is primarily for walls and countertops. Grey is for floors. Grey has a larger mesh sand particle, therefore it has more compressive strength. White, with a smaller sand particle is more smooth, ie, creamier.

   Although both have binders added to the mix, the grey has additional acrylic powder additives. Both comply with the pertinent ASTM sections.

   Also, white costs more than grey.

   *White is stickier and sets up quicker.White is less likely to show through white grout.

   White thinset is used for light colored marble or other porous materials where there's a risk of bleed through from the gray colored thinset. Pour a teaspoon of coffee on the back of white marble and you'll see why in about 10 minutes.

   What is the difference between grey thin set and white thin set (besides color)? When is white used?

   I usually always use white unless Im going to grout with grey grout... I always use grey for setting backerboard because its cheaper. I thought white had a longer open time then grey. It also smells different then grey. BTW...Rich, the ultra set worked like a charm. Thanks.
