Thought I should give an update of the past few months of what I’ve done because of the things I’ve learned from all of you.
-Bought the Dewalt portable table saw….45 lbs….of awesome sawing.
-Bought the Milwalkee heavy duty saw zall…..awesome demoing
-Bought the 2008 Chevy Silverado work truck with heavy duty suspension ….instead of the high mile beat up work vans. $16,000 of awesome truck.(Thanks gas crisis)
– Bought Kreg Jig system…….Two awesome custom built in bookcases…..Ease of use made me feel like I was cheating.
-Took on more challenging work because of the higher confidence I’ve had since joining and learning here.
-Bought and read The E Myth books…..taken better steps in building an awesome buisness.
-Organized my shop and truck and job sites better…….Get awesome compliments from customers and other contractors.
-Paid to have my huge roof redone……instead of building homemade scaffolding and killing myself trying to do it myself……awesome to be alive and dry.
-Just having an awesome year so far and I know I owe a lot of gratitude to you all……………Thank you for sharing your gift.
God Bless …….~Mike~

I'm Jason and I'm a BT'er . I too have learned a lot here over the years. I especially like getting feedback on other folks experiences when I post a question about something I've not done before. Fine homebuilding mag $38, computer internet access $40, info from Breaktime - Priceless! Thanks all,Jason"it aint the work I mind,

LOL -- Aint nobody here been able to teach this old fa$t to pay for anything yet, just built a scaffold on the cabin last weekend, need to find another day to do the roof. <G>
Art, are you going to pull those roofing nails & re-use them?
Or splurge on new ones?
Can't picture too many roofing nails in the salvage yard at Boeing...........
I remember your Crowning Moments, been awhile since I've re-read it though.

U know i'm your biggest fan.... I'm not as far off the edge as you but i try to make up for it in bulk...
BUT... I had no problem write'n the check to the drywall hangers $6 a board 4x12 5/8 rock and alot of it was 18ft up.... 2k board.... took them about 2 weeks...
I get great satisfaction working and even better when i'm save'n more $$$ than i could make (like fab'n my 60 rise 6 landing steel & concrete stairway less than 3k material cost vs 40k plus low bid)
to watch people work harder than me and get things done for less than i could and to see rapid progess... it was money well spent for me to have them hang the drywall...
and it didn't hurt at all to write the check... i was half expecting pain...

"fab'n my 60 rise 6 landing steel & concrete stairway less than 3k material cost vs 40k plus low bid)"That sounds like fun to me. I don't know why but I like welding and fabbing that kind of stuff.

You and I talked about this way back when.........we both started out as welders.
I too like to fab and weld up stuff but I doubt I'd be saying that if I had stuck to welding as a career! It's fun but I think its because I dont have to do it for a living.
Doug
Yeah...now that you mention it, I'd probably be very, very bored if I had welded for the last 30 years.
@12 i had enough $$ to buy a welder or a clutch for my mini bike... i got the welder...
working with steel while sharing much with wood... it's in my mind... more forgiving (if you cut steel short you can put it back) and might take less skill to make it an artform than wood... i can bend twist curl and shape steel in minutes with a very limited skill set.... I built a killer 12ft rise 540degree spiral staircase very art deco... maybe 25hrs invested and less than $100 in materal.... required a saw and a mig... and a few clamps... it LOOKS like art i'd never built one before... maybe i could build one out of wood... but not for $100 and not in 25hrs and not with the killer art deco rails...
with all the brackets and "stuff" i seem to have to fab i don't know how anyone does general construction without being able to fab and weld...
again like you said... maybe i like it because i don't have to do it... but it sure is easy to impress folks with steel that would never be impressed with wood...

It would take quite a while to list all the important things I've learned here. Seems like a daily event.
Having this resource has been a big help to me in deciding how to design my next home and what materials to use.
I anticipate continuing to benefit from others who generously offer their experience here, for many years to come.
With Gratitude and Respect,
Peter
Just recently, I learned that I shouldn't weld while wearing crocs. ;)
Mike,
Me too.
The more I learn. The more I realize how much I do not know.
