Guy working for me on the weekend lays tile for a tile company during the week; assumed he knows what he’s doing. Went to check on a 8′ x 10′ floor with 12″ sq. ceramic tile going in. Heavy usage of thinset and time made me look a bit deeper. He’s using thinset as a leveler, over 5/8ths thick. Thought its called thinset for a reason. Is this going to be a problem?

Are you sure it's thinset and not medium bed?
If you can find the bags he poured from, it should say there what the capacities are. I think there is alot more overlap beween products than there used to be.

Look, just send me to my drawer. This whole talking-to-you thing is like double punishment.
5/8 sounds a little thick, considering the biggest notches I normally use is 1/2" Probably should have use a little quick setting flor leveler first, but obviously he is more concerned with getting paid than using the right materials. You might check the instructions on the bag of thinset and see if it gives a maximum thickness.

It's thinset not medium bed. Bag doesn't say, but Versabond website says over 1/4" use medium bed. Dodged a bullet though; I had pointed out area he had leveled was now high. He changed it, now level & w/in 5/16ths. Guess I'll eat the wasted time and feel lucky.
My experience with thick thinset (just from the leftover lumps I clean out of the bucket) is that they can stay plastic - a long time - like a week.
