thinset thickness

CCI | Posted in General Discussion on March 2, 2008 04:29am

This may be a really stupid question but, is there a way to figure the thickness of a layer of thinset underneath a floor tile?

I am trying to calculate how much subfloor to put under my tiles to come close to flush with another floor.

For instance, if I use a trowel with a 1/4″ x1/4″ notch and push the tile all the way down will that give me a 1/8″ thick bed of thinset?  I assume so but I have been wrong in the past. More time than I care count actually.

Thanks.

Yer thinkin' about it too much man.

Yes.....the 1/4" notch will give you roughly 1/8" thickness in the end.....give or take.

Certainly within reason for "close to flush".

More importantly is the type of tile you will be embedding when determining the notch of the trowel.

I know about checking the tiles for which trowel to use but I have to build up the floor anyway so I figured to get as close as possible to flush.  I was wondering if when the ridges are "flattened out" if they just fill in the grooves or if there is some "left over".  I guess that works with depth and width the same but not with 1/4"x3/8", etc. trowels.

I am quite anal with that stuff since i hate being off just enough that it is a problem but not enough that I can blame it on the materials.

My 100 yr. old home has 3/4" T&G plank subflooring. When I bought it 14 years ago, I added a layer of 3/4" ply to help stiffen and flatten its imperfections.

3yrs. ago....prior to tearing out the carpeting and installing the hardwood flooring I realized that the tile floor I had installed in the kitchen was going to be 1/4" higher than the hardwood floors. So I installed a layer of 1/4" ply to my entire first floor.

You wanna talk anal? I'm ALL over that! LOL.

        Best of luck.

Yeah....it's just the reason for the suspension that pizzed me off.

A picture of a chick in a bikini.

Same chick, wearing similar garb, as several others posted in the same thread.

Their pics were deleted, and they received a warning.

I got no warning....just the boot. All because someone complained to the mods.

And I think I know the Mary responsible for the complaint.

It might be a shade more than 1/8" but I'd assume 1/8", build up your subfloor and then set tiles.

When you get to the door opening, check with level and if you need to, cheat up a few tiles 1/32 or so to give you what you are looking for.  So long as you are not using a square cut marble with no grout line, you should not notice if you cheat it a little.
