Hello,
RE: Tiling Floors:
Both the manufacturer and the tile guy say to put down 1/4″ hardiBacker with thinset and screws. Here are my questions:
- Is thinset really necessary? [after all, it’s going to be screwed every 6-8″]
- If necessary what knotch trowel, 1/4″ or less?
Thanks,
Roger <><

1/4" Notch Trowel is fine
and the thinset is not meant to hold the backerboard down, it's meant to fully support it.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have about 65 sheets of hardibacker to thinset down [lucky me :-)]. Good thing I have 5 kids who love [sic.] to help and want to move into the new house.
Ditto CAG. Mix the thinset a little runny, but not too much ... you want it to squeeze into all the recesses and dips of the floor. It's not supposed to hold up the backerboard like it does tile.

If you have 65 sheets to put down, you may want to consider using the Ditra mat system in stead. Ditra works great when you have proper sub-floor thickness and large areas to cover
