It may not be pretty but… you can pad the beam where the garage door track mounts and extend the mounting arm its maximum length (or even make an extension out of bar stock) and mount it lower on the garage door. This will essentially extend the working length of the opener. Just make sure the track is mounted high enough above the door to allow for clearance when the top door panel swings in.

Installed a couple of overhead doors in an old barn. Had to rework alot of old timbers to make everything fit. Now I'm installing the electric openers. I worked on one door opener from 8:00 till just a few minutes ago. I finally got to slide open the door to find out that this opener only has 7'6" of track for my 8' door.
I am probably going to have to get another opener but I'm looking for a way to make this one work. It's a Genie with the chain drive.
Gonna fix or replace in the morning. So, get your suggestions in tonight.
Thanks.
*Ryan.. u can fix it so the door don't go all the way up...or fix it so the door don't go all the way down...take ur choice...FWIW....i can't beat the garage door companies at their job .. so we always sub out the door and opener ...and move on to the next thing...after a couple years of doing business with them , they treat us as a special customer, ...keep shopping for a good one and you won't regret it....last job, we were hanging the sliding barn door in the back while they were installing the overhead door in the front...
*The reason I didn't know that the opener was not appropriate is that I, like you, don't install doors or openers. This is for a couple in my church. He's gotten ill over the last year and could no longer open the sliding door on his out building.I first told them to call the big box because they could install cheaper than I could. The store installer said it was too difficult a job for them so I stepped up. It's taken alot of reframing to make room for this thing. I can install a track extension but I've got a nice pocket in the roof framing now where the opener is. I'd hate to have to make a new pocket for it.
*Hey Ryan.... no good deed goes unpunished..but it still gets marked down in the big book, keep up the good workMike

*Hey Ryan:You can get an extension for Genie screw drive openers to make it fit an 8' door - or at least I installed one about 5 years ago. Not sure about the chain drives.
*Thanks Matt,I ended up doing just that. With the extension. The extension wasn't the problem, the problem was that I had done so much work to make the room for the opener where it was. I just sucked it up and did the necessary work to make the opener fit in a new spot. With all the work required to make these two garage doors fit (chiseling concrete block, reframing openings, moving and reframing 6x6 ceiling joist timbers, bolting everything that should have been bolted 50 years ago, etc.) it took me six days to install two garage doors and one opener. This was one of those jobs that just seems to never end. But it's over now. I celebrated with a pizza and birch beer.
*Ouch Ryan! Lets see, 6 days...Stood up half a house...$9000 or so.Maybe $12,000.Now I remeber why I don't remodel!blue
