I recently looked at a job that has a 7 foot crawl space with a poured slab.(very bad-unlevel-was poured like crawlspace instead of treated as basment pour) owner would like to put tile down, and was planning to shim the floor and lay a plywood subfloor down.
My understanding is that when you have concrete, tile gets layed directly on top of that, am I right?
I suggested that the floor get leveled with a self leveling compound and then tile, I know that will get me up to an inch.
(By the way I will not be doing the floor job, I was there to look at some framing issues – but I would like to give them the correct adivce)
also if he were to build up the floor as much as he is thinking I need to know because it affects the stairs I will be framing.

yup, either that or self levelling compound, Tape along the base of walls and holes to keep the mix from going where you dont want it to go.__________________________

If there are any really high lumps, chip them off. Then use self leveling compound. It works well. You must follow the directions for mixing carefully -- measure the water and add exactly what they specify. Don't guess or mix by eye.
Self leveling is a bit of a misnomer......a good aluminum extrusion screed is a necessary with the usual compounds....the real self-leveling gypcrete isn't something I'd use in a basement slab application.....
Ditto Imerc.
Self-leveling does work as advertised. But the problem is that it develops a pancake-batter leading edge, so you have to work that a little. But the stuff behind the edge does self-level.
