I tried a tip from a tiler- I used durarock board set in thinset, and screwed every 6″ over 3/4 subfloor. It worked very well. very solid, no squeaks (you will need to address any squeaks prior to laying the backer board. It was well worth the extra effort and easier than laying a mortar bed.

I will be installing tile flooring in two of our new bathrooms. I have seen two types of backer boards, "Dura-Rock" and "Hardy-Board". Which one is the best and what is the best way to install it? I was talking with a friend of mine today and he knows someone who used Dura-Rock and had problems with squeaks. Please give advice. Thanks.
*Squeeks?Must have been in the subfloor. Unless the backer board was not installed correctly. But this is a new one on me.
*used both.... liked the hardi-backer better...follow the mfr's instructions..
*i Squeeks? Must have been in the subfloor. Unless the backer board was not installed correctly.ITA MD, I think "squeeks" only happen w/wood--e.g., if the subfloor is out of level, rotting, swollen etc. (and uncorrected--causing, e.g., some nails not to get the purchase needed, wood rubbing together, etc.). I doubt the backer boards are of inferior quality. Another prob could be too few nails, spaced farther apart than 6" (back in my tile days, at least), or unevenly cut and/or placed-together pieces of that backer, with gaps greater than 1/8-3/16" between the pieces, or not enough thinset/whatever crammed into the spaces between the pieces (or not leveled off after?), or, well, doesn't a latex additive, level, and screed help w/this in all circumstances? Like I said, I've been out of da biz for quite some time! Well-installed backer board should stop all squeeks, AFAIK. Of course, the standard disclaimer applies: I could be wrong! Please let us know when you discover the prob! I have an acre (big exaggeration) of sf I want to have tiled, or DIY if I'm feeling ambitious.
