First, thanks for reading and your for your help. 4 months ago, I had my bathtub surround completely re-tiled. I installed USG Durock brand cement board held to the studs with cement board screws and then I had a professional tile installer actually set (with laytex modified thinset) and grout the tile. Big problem: the much of the grout is literally crumbling and falling out into the tub. What causes this to occur? I’m obviously going to get him to come back out and repair it but I wanted to know the probable causes first before calling him back out. Thanks again!

I've never seen that happen on a new job under the worst of conditions.
I can't imagine! Has this guy been a pro for years or is he a retired cop or fireman looking for side money? Even still.....
My only guess might be that he added way to much water to the grout which weakens any grout or concrete.....its the weakest link.
Please let us hear his reasoning......if he actually comes back which I doubt.

What Andy said, to much water.
"wet" grout goes on easier, but it also comes off/ out faster. :)
Not that you want to think about this right now, but if he added to much water to the grout, what about the thinset?
Could be he mixed all of the grout at once, then after it started setting up he added water to thin it out and stretch it. Color? brand? unsanded we assume.
