Bathroom application. I’m finishing a bathroom that will have tile floor to ceiling on a wall with a window. I’d like to round the corner and make the tile abut the window frame. The window is outside the shower over tub enclosure.
My plan is to use pine to frame the opening and use corner pieces to transition from the wall to the pine casing. Then fill the remainder of the space with tile pieces cut to size.
3 Specific questions.
1. Mastic to adhere the tile to the pine?
2. Should I use durock instead for the subtile layer?
3. Can I use tile for the windowsill or should I go to the Cultured marble or composite Corian stuff

backer board the window jambs/sill the same as the walls......mesh tape and thinset all the joints.
Tile around.....I'd used the same thinset around the window as ya just did on the walls.......I personally use mastic in low moisture/no strength need app's like a decreative tile above a counter backsplash..usually directly over drywall.
For a wet area....I'd strongly recommend a one piece sill......marble/cultured/swanstone/corian/etc........for a window out of the shower area.......tile and sealed grout would be fine....but depending on the rest of the room/fixtures....a solid sill....maybe with ears......usually looks better.
Just looks more like a window should with a solid sill. Opinions/styles/tastes may differ.

I appreciate the insight. I just get mixed feelings with the shims. Hanging Durock on that seems pretty flimsy. Particularily that it is a 4 inch wide piece that makes it seem weak. The thinset surely seems to tighten up the connections.
As for 4x4 tile. I was going to use the mastic even in the shower surround. I used it in the place I'm in now and it holds like a champ. Considering that I have to do the rest of the room which is greenboard I felt it wouldn't matter. Not sure about thinset on drywall.
1 Piece sill sounds just fine. Come to think of it I remember our counters when I was a kid. Dad would just complain to high heaven if we sat on the counter. It seems the edge tile would come off pretty frequently. 1 Piece sounds more secure.
