What are peoples thoughts on laying 12×12 ceramic tile in thinset over sheet vinyl no wax flooring? I’ve seen this done over really old vinyl(30+ yrs), but never the newer (10yrs) no wax stuff. Would you guys(or gals) try it…or would you pull up the vinyl, and try to remove all that glue yuck….
thanks for the feedback

Peter,
Remove the vinyl and the underlayment under it. The underlayment should be a sanded plywood of some kind that is attached to the subfloor. No reason to get into that "glue yuck". Install new, properly sized underlayment for the tile and go for it. You can rest assured that it is done the proper way and not have to worry if the mortar is well adhered to the vinyl or if there were some loose spots in the vinyl which would probably result in cracked tile or grout. Good luck.

*I'll tile over tile, tile over concrete, tile over tile backer, and maybe tile over plywood if i had a good enough reason, but i'm leary of tile over vinyl (or carpet).joe d
