Hi guys:How the heck is everyone?Good I hope!
I got a shower surround, and I used 5/8″ durock from the shower base to the ceiling. The taper wants to use regular joint compound at the ceiling to wall joint and at the wall joint where it transistions to 5/8″ drywall. There will be mosaic tiles on the durock.
I told him I think that it should be durabond or something simular because of the water wicking thru the tile and possibly damaging the joint compound.
Anybody got the answer.
Thanks Greg

if U got enough water up there to cause problems ...
U got bigger problems!
but ... I'd use either durobond, easy sand ... or thinset, and then skim coat the TSet with durobond or easy sand.
That said ... CBU walls ... drywall ceiling.
tile on the walls all the way up to the ceiling, right?
me ... I'd simply caulk the top of the CBU to the ceiling. Nice fat bead ... then .. tile will cover it ... and another bead of grout caulk will seal the top of the tile to said drywall ceiling.
no taping.

Greg, I will tend to use my thinset mastic for all taping when using Durarock or a cement board.
Grayhawk:can it still be used on the drywall to durock transition joint.

Greggo, you can use the thinset mastic to transition to drywall. Just feather it our, let it dry and if need be you can use drywall mud over the part that transitions to the drywall.
related to this topic, is it generally acceptable to use finished cbu for the ceiling?
I did, was hardi with 2 coats oil primer, Lasco Siliconizer skim coat and then another application of same as knockdown, another coat primer, then two coats oil paint. Corners got silicone.
Seems to be holding up very well after two years.
Picking your brains, how would some of you finish cbu for a shower ceiling? Would you even do it?
I'd use some sort of setting-type compound everywhere within splash range of the shower. The drywall (ceiling) should be moisture-resistant. Humidity/splashing will soften ordinary premixed compound.
Also, mix a fungicide in the paint for the ceiling, or use paint specifically designed for bathrooms.
happy?
