I just finished installing schulter underlayment in my bathrooms/laundry rooms. I used the specified thinset and now need unmodified thinset for setting the tiles. I just wondering what size trowl to get for putting down 13″ x 13″ tiles? I just saw a small article in my new FHB magazine, but it didn’t give specifics. I’m currently using a 1/4″ x 1/4″ square and it seemed to work well for the underlayment.
Also, I need to tile over the durock in my showers. Could I use kerdi-band tape to seal the joints of this or is it best to use thinset and mesh tape?

1/4" notched trowel is what I'd use.
Kerdi-band over durock wouldn't do much for you -- since the durock isn't a moisture barrier, no sense in making the seams a moisture barrier.
If you haven't installed the durock, I like to use GP Denshield (which IS a moisture barrier) and Kerdi band for the seams. Otherwise, I'd just go with the mesh & thinset.
