Had to remove some tiles from a painted drywall srface. Some of the paper came off with the tiles, exposing the gypsum. To reattach tiles, do I need to skim with durabond or something to give the tiles a sound surface to adhere to?

skim - prime / seal and do your thing....
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

Yep, patch/skim with your favorite poison. Try for a non-dusty surface, using a primer if necessary.
