| Posted in Business on March 3, 2005 03:08am

I’m new to the bidding game

I need a labor price laying 1/4 hardie board and  for setting 1’x1′ ceramic tile and grout.

As some have suggested, you've seen the job.  How long x  $/hr. you want to make  + profit, divided by the total sq. footage.  Best of luck.

$6 a square foot for basic installation in new construction.

Remodels have to be seen before I'll give a quote.

        $6/ft for tile labor ...

        $4/ft for backer labor ...

        materials extra, of course.

and that's just a rough guide line ... unless this guy is planning on doing tile day in and day out .... all year long ... the sq ft prices don't average out.

I price my tile work by the job ....

one big square box is wayyy different than one small cut up place.

plus ... where an I setting up to cut?

and am I using a wet saw .. ie ..lotsa in and out cuts ...

or am I snap scoring lotsa straight pieces and maybe going outside to make a few other cuts with my grinder.

btw ... how's the tile and backer getting to where ever it's going to live?

and ... how's it getting from the tile store to the job site?

        borders?

same manufacturer? Same material? Same thickness?

what kinda grout we using anyways ... epoxy .. a fine choice ... that's extra.

thresholds ... expansion joints .... butt the old trim or under new base?

I gotta know such things ...

        I have more.

    Bronc,

You don't mention your location which will make a big difference in the price. Here in N-central Iowa, tile subs charge around 5-6 bucks per square foot for labor and materials (CBU, screws, grout etc). Tile not included of course.

    Regards,

    Dennis

My tile sub gets $1 per sf for backer installtion and $5 per sf for tile installation.

sq ft? No way unless its a strip mall....or simple sq room.

Look at it this way. I framed out a shower stall in my house

    approx 4x5 1/2' x 8' high.

Also framed in an 18" bench seat 4' long....with an overhang of about 3".

Dropped the perimeter of the ceiling down approx 4"...around the outside corner.

Knee walls about four feet high on two walls

I built the thing into the corner of the bathroom.

Using 4" tumbled marble tiles...Wonderboard on the framing.

So far its been five days with a helper and me.

HAve to run in and outside to use my wet saw when I can't use the snap cutter.

Mudded the floor in that time as well.....I'd say I have about two more days till its fully grouted and cleaned up

And oh yeh, that doesnt include figuring out and ordering and picking up the solid tumble marble seat top and wall tops and curb top....

In other words, forget about sq ft price unless its just a  square simple room....otherwise.its pretty much what Jeff Buck said.

    Be well bro

I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace.

I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you

and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us.

I don't get it. You want info but you don't supply any - not even on your Bio Page?

    a. Walls or floors?

    b. How many sqft?

    c. Who's supplying what?

    d. Is the substrate/ stucture even?

    e. How many corners - inside and outside?

    f. Just one style, color and brand of tile?

    g. Are other trades involved? Do you have to come back after a day or so, so the plumber can do his/ her stuff?

    h. What part of the country are you in - specify city/ town as well?

    i. Do you have a wet saw and will you be able to use it? How far away will it be?

And you thought construction was easy.

In NYC I get $15 - $18/ sqft for basic 1x1 ceramic tile with sanded or unsanded grout. $5/ sqft for HB. In the suburbs of parts of Maryland, guys are asking for $6-$10 sqft. I'd go hungry at those rates. 1x1 tiles are tough. Getting the sheets to line up and not show a sheet pattern. Be sure to account for that extra time. You may be laying a sqft at a time, but keeping things square and straight ain't the easiest or fastest thing in the world.

    Good luck,

    F
