Hey Guys,
First time on the site although I am a subscriber. Need an answer to the following question. On my recent build, I was left with a 1/8 difference between the height of the finished wood foor(3/4 inch) and the ceramic tile(7/8 inch) and forced to use a transition piece. In the future how do I make up the 1/8 inch difference? Thanks, David Africano

Gently shim that floor as you get close to the transition. In a doorway it's easy to make up an eighth.

what was pre existing? the wood or the ceramic tile? Sounds like you did the tile to the wood?
Did you use a cbu? if so I'd have feathered the cbu up a bit with the thinset under it then feathered it up a hair more under the tile.If you did a mud job then you just need to get your heights simply exact.

That can be a tough one to plan to work out perfectly.....especially if the finished materials are not known at the time of framing. Not just, "wood flooring will go in these room and tile in those"....but the actual wood flooring and tiles you`ll be installing.
Whenever possible have the subfloors of slighty different height.....floors to be tiled a little lower (1/4"?). You can more easily build up the difference on installation with tiles.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think shimming is what I'll try next time...I mean what I'll have the guys do. I have seen an inlaid piece of flooring in this transition area that is 4-5 inches in width and laid perpendicular to the rest of the floor...looks very nice and finished.

Just be realistic and plan on using a threshold.
