My friend is putting tile on his deck, and has already put 3/4 T&G over the 1 1/2 inch fir decking material. He keeps getting told that he needs to put another layer of 1/2 inch ply over the 3/4, but that seems excessive to me. Is that necessary? It seems the 2x would be providing ample strength.

Depends. What is the structure? Joist size and spacing and span. Is the deck supposed to be waterproof? Where are you located?

located in BC. I believe the joists are 16" OC. It is not a covered deck, and it is south facing. In the winter, it gets maybe -10 (Celsius)-------------------------------

It would still be helpful to have the size of the joists and the span. One posible reason for the aditional layer of plywood is to minimize deflection. But iof the joists are right, then the ply is not needed.

What's going to keep this whole thing from just rotting out? Is there any membrane under the tile?
You may do well to check out http://johnbridge.com as tiling a deck in a climate such as your's poses several challenges that if ignored, will lead to early failure.

Tell your buddy not to tile his deck. I have a good friend (who lays tile)who said that many tile, thinset and grout manufacturers will not cover warranty work on jobs like this.
It doesn't matter one bit if he doesnot provide a waterproof memebrane and a drainage channel. All the wood will rot out from under the tile in a few years anyway

Not to mention the rotting of the decking but also the huge amount of additional weight that you are going to be putting on the deck. Plywood, thinset ( mortar ) and tile aren't light materials. Add snow to that being in Canada with 16' spacing... I would check the weight out before you he has a major collapse on his hands. Just a thought.
