I have plaster walls, in good condition, in the kitchen, am putting ceramic tile in as backsplash, and up the wall above the sink. I believe a cement backer board is recommended for under the tile, but am wondering if I can just apply the tile right onto the plaster. If not, what is the bast fastener for putting the backerboard onto the plaster? Can’t seem to find the answer to this in the archives. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have done this in my home and also on rental property and I had not had any problems with adhesion nor cracking. This tile has been installed for 14 years in one property and 10 years in the other.

Thanks, Stan. Did you score the plaster or do anything else to it?
Just make sure the plaster is clean and dust-free.
Luck, jwwhat the heck was I thinking?
No, you do not need to score the plaster. I used a mastic type cement rather than a thinset adhesive.
