Ok, the cat won round one – now it’s time for me to win round two. My wife has already pulled up the carpet and pad in the upstairs bathroom and wants tile put down.
My question is – should I take the quick and easy way out and tile up to the existing toilet or pull the tile and place the toliet on top of the new tile? If I pull the toilet and tile under what must I do to put it back – I’m thinking a standard wax ring won’t fill the gap.
FYI – the cat had kidney stones (quite common) – 2 weeks of anti-biotics and the cat is back in the litter box.
Thanks
RJ

Yup...ya gotta pull the toilet...sorry
Use a thick wax ring....unless you are adding thick underlayment before tile...then you might actually need to reset the flange higher....
Thanks - that was my preference - just wanted to see what the pro's have to say.
Thanks - I'm on it.

Pull the toilet for certain. Try an advanced search for this other question. It has been covered exhaustively in the not-so-distant past.
You may get lucky and discover that the plumber had to suck the flange down with the screws and that it pops up 1/2" all by itself when unscrewed. The ideal situation is flange atop finished floor, but there is wiggle room for other alternatives.
Others will be along shortly to quiz you on substrate issues. Good luck; the cat doesn't stand a chance.

Yea as others have said Yank the toilet. It isnt that big of a deal. If you have to they sell spacer rings to raise the flange so you wont have to use a double wax ring.
Just make sure you put a big rag in the flange while you got the toilet pulled. Make sure its big enough so it wont got down the flange accidently.
