Did it once 10 yrs ago and it's held up fine. Would I do it again? Probably not, but maybe if the job called for it for a good reason. You'll gain the lino and underlay thickness, lose the cement board thickness if you pull it out.

Thanks. I think underneath the lino is some old 'marmoleum' looking tile. Do you know what it could be?

How olds the house? 2 floors ago. I suppose some asbestos laden tile glued down with some hard grab black adhesive. The saving grace is that there's probably some type of underlay under that too. Tho you shouldn't, you could cut through all that every so often and rip it all up in pcs. Of course, don't cut through or into the subfloor. Sawzall makes less airborne dust.
