I have a small bathroom floor that I will be tiling, I will be leaving the existing floor tile down and tiling over it. It is a very sound mud floor base with small 2″ x 2″ tile. I would like to know what the best way to tile over this would be, should “something” be skimmed over the existing surface prior to tiling? Or should I just mortar and tile right over it? Thanks .

Anyone home?
Why are you going to leave the old tile down?
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
Greetings DonD,
That subject has been addressed here on Breaktime a number of different times in the past.
In the event you fail to receive the information you desire, you might find it in the archives.
If you scroll down in the lower left corner of your screen there is a search function that will take you to previous threads dealing with whatever you type in the search bar.
If you type in 'old tile', 'tile removal' or other keywords of the subject matter you'll get a supply of data from those old threads.
Or this tile forum might prove helpful.

Any thoughts on Mapei's kerabond/kerelastic?
You have to find a good thinset that works well bonding to the old tile. Your local tile store should be able to recommend one. I have tiled over tile for 30 years with out a problem as long as the floor is in good condition.Skimming is not nessary unless you want to level off the floor better than it is.
Just trowel it over the existing tile woodman?
Tiling over 2 by 2 inch tiles is real easy because of all the grout lines help hold everything together.
So just spread the mortar over it and go?
Give it a good scrubbing before you tile and make sure the closet bolts are long enough given the new floor height.

I tiled overtop my 2x2 inch shower floor with new 2X2 tiles. I used Ultraflex's Polymer Modified Thinset. Simply spread it out on top of old tile and installed new. Worked very well.
