first time in the forum...not sure how it works...i just put them up with mastic. if your afraid of them falling till set use 1 X 4s with shims to keep pressure on. do you layout from a center line to avoid slivers.
Unless the ceiling is considerably low and cramps the quarters, increasing the moisture buildup, I prefer not to tile the ceiling.
However, on those occasions in which I cannot talk the homeowner out of it, I usually start with the ceiling. I'll often lay it out on the diagonal so that I don't have to concern myself with grout joints lining up with the surrounding wall tile.
I screw some 1X scraps to the walls all the way around about an inch and a half down from the ceiling. I use thinset to apply the tiles. As I set a course, I slide a peice of 3/4" ply or somesuch atop the strips below the set course. In order to snug it up with the tile, I'll shim it up tight. Continue with the next course in the same manner until the ceiling is complete. Give it 24 hrs. to set....remove shims, supports and ledgers....yer ready to begin the walls.
Good luck!

Do not use mastic. It is not intended for wet areas.
...that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Never tiled a ceiling before but I really like the idea of 1x cleats 1-1/2" down. NICE!!
Now I know why I like this forum.
