Hi one and all,
Back again from a long hiatus. Had a spell with a bad ticker.
Got a new bee in my ear, Timber Framing. Any info out there about using SIPS, (such as Insulspan Eps panels), as a sub floor for a timber framed structure?
Have done a lot of searching on the web about SIP’s, saw it mentioned that they could be used as sub floor, but none of the “hows”howOW does one support them? HOW far can they “clear span” and under what loads? HOW does one connect them to the timber frame? Do the timber frame posts sit on top of the panel (not a HOW but close)? HOW does the panel, foundation and frame connection detail look? Etc. . .etc. . .etc.
Anyetc. woetc.e greatly appreciated, as I want to start construction as soon as I can, here on the MA/NH border, (figure around the middle of March).
If you email me, could you mailh drawings and/or sketches, Pleeeease?
Thanks,
Cadman

Cadman -
I'm not an expert on either timberframing or SIP's... having said that I am about to start a project using both. But a good resource for info is www. winterpanel.com - they make SIP's. But the best all around resource I have seen are three books about timber framing written by Tedd Benson. A serach on Amazon.com will turn them up.
As far as floors go, I'm sure that SIP's can be used for floors but I don't think that is their best use. Also, look at the differences between panels that use EPS and panels that use urethane. One thing that scares me about EPS panels is that they lose all structural strength at a fairly low temperature in a fire.
In addition, from what I understand panels are available with a wide variety of finishes on either side.
