Hi all,
We have a ranch home in northern Ohio (conventional stick frame with hip roof over basement) that we are planning on renovating/remodeling in the near future. Both my wife and I love the look of timber frame and log homes and would like to incorporate some of these styles into our plans. What would be the best way to look at this project for cost, insulating etc, can a timber frame roof with their open ceilings be constructed on top of the 2×4 stick walls or would it be better to open up the ceilings with conventional framing and finish the inside with the timber frame look? Our ideas already have most of the existing roof being changed/replaced since a larger garage and shop addition is in the plans. We are DIY’rs, but we do know our imitation and most of the major construction would be contracted out, we are just looking for the most bang for the buck and would rather not be lead down the wrong path from the very beginning. Also, what this groups opinion on half log siding?
All thoughts and opinions welcome.

There was a company in North or South Carolina (harmony exchange?) that would design, build and truck timber framed trusses to be placed atop stick built walls. I think you just needed to double or triple up the studs under the truss bearing points. I'm sure there are many other companies that do the same thing.
Then, you need to decide if you'll use SIPS on top of the trusses or manually build up the roof layers. The trusses give you the open look you want without the cost of the wall and sill framing.
