I have never installed round hollow porch columns made of a synthetic material. Are there any tips or suggestions anyone might pass my way on anchoring them in place. They are not load bearing columns but simply for looks. Thanks.

My favorite method, whether attaching them to wood or concrete, is to make blocks out of laminated pressure treated plywood. The blocks are the same shape as the inside of the column and about 1 1/2" or more thick. The blocks are anchored to the top and bottom surface and the columns are snapped around them or they are inserted in them as you build the structure.

*I'll go with G.LaLonde... you may have to cut your column a little shorter to be able to drop it over the base then raise it to locate on the top block. Depending on your set up you may need bases and capitols to hide the gap. We have just done four this week except they were load bearing with a post inside, a real pig of a job... I don't care if we never have to do one again.

The customer had already purchased the columns and they are solid with seperate capitals and bases. What makes this difficult is they are to be installed on deck that has a concrete slab 10" below. I guess the columns will mount to the slab with the capital raised to rest on the wood deck. Weird I know, this is not going to be fun to do. I appreciate any advice you folks have to offer. Thanks for your responses.

I installed 4 HB&G PermaCast columns - 12" d X 8' tall - and followed their instuctions using bent steel clips top and bottom as well as using construction adhesive to the top and bottom. This was an old porch with roof and the original wood columns had long since been replaced with faux wrought iron. I used a lolly column and cribbing to temporarily raise the roof enough to take load off wrought and set PermaCast into place.
I marked and set all 4 clips and then removed 1 for install.
Be sure to set base and cap on shaft before installing shaft because its really messy to remove with that adhesive all over the place and slip them on after.
*I'm confused. I have installed lost of different types of columns, but I'm not sure that I understand your situation. Are they resting on a concrete slab holding up a wood deck 10 feet(?) above? What brand are they if you know? I'll check back tonight. Ed.

Thanks for the advice Bill. That is how I was planning on going about this job but sometimes it is nice to have someone concur. The FHB discussion forum sure is great. Thanks for all the responses.

Goofy question time. Has anyone ever tried to fill one of those hollow columns with something to eliminate the hollow sound they give when rapped with a knuckle? I'm thinking sand.

Would appreciate any suggestions on installing loadbearing columns in hurricane zone.
