We have existing shingle roofing. We would like to change the look of our home to a more “Key West” look. What would be the procedure for installing metal roofing. Can ewe remove the shingles and go over the felt or is there a more complicated technique involved? Help!

Elizabeth,
You can install metal over felted deck or if it has a single layer of shingles and is in good shape you can strip roof with 1x4 or larger and screw metal to them.
Give more info for specifics or post a pic of your roof.

*Go to your metal roofing dealer. Ask for a copy of the installation instructions for the brand metal roofing you plan to install. They will specify in detail what kind of base you must have to intall their roof. Now, you may be able to get just as good result by doing something different than the instructions. There seldom is just one way to do a job. But, you may have a warranty problem if something goes wrong. Plus, making contact with the dealer will help you decide just what it is you want to do.

Depending on the style of metal roofing usually you will install furring to insure a good nailing surface, but if you are using standing seam metal then you can go flat to the roof but you should have the proper tools to do this. There are a lot of new metal products make sure you check the manufacturers recommendation.
*all the metal roofs I have been involved with look like crap unless they are resting on a solid flat surface, ie plywood or osb. when installed over shingles the metal can be ever so slightly bent when walked on {same goes for furing strips}. this can really show up when the sun is just right. once put metal over 3/8 ply on 2'oc rafters. we tried to walk only where there was a rafter underneath. damm plywood flexed so much that the tinn looked bent to hell when we were donemaybe some clients wouldn't notice but i sure wouldn't want to drive past it everyday.tim h- Home of the last great race The Iditrod
