Any cheap no name brand to start with stay away from. I have had good luck with american standard and kohler, Toto is good too, never installed one, most of my customers get scared off by there price. Have not had any complaints on the Kohler Cimarron installed 3 of these in the last 4 months no complaints, even from the pickiest persons.

I have had good luck with Mansfield and Gerber.
"What brands do I stay away from?"
The budget ones.
Walked right into that, didn't you? LOL
With standards mandating low water volumn the flush design and a smooth venturii is important to efficiency. Kohler and TOTO invest more in research and production quality than the cheaper brands do, with good reputation and performance.

Kohler's Welworth is good.
Toto's Drake with slooooow close seat, your customer will not regret paying the price.
Anything else, buy a plunger and show them how to use it!
Mike Kohler has a slow close lid also, spendy around 50. HD stocks them. Wallyo
I bought one that was higher than a normal height, I dont see why everybody dont do it, easlier on the knees.
keeps the DW from having to hop up onto the stool....
besides they don't like to see their feet swinging...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->
WOW!!! What a Ride!Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
At HD they post the size of the venturi, look for something w/2" or more ,For me that's been one of the key things.
I just installed a Toto Ultimate a couple of weeks ago. It is amazing how it swishes everything down with just 1.6 gal of water. While it is probably one of the best for getting stuff down in a single flush, it does have a problem with not having enough "downwash" along the back of the bowl to keep from collecting "skid marks". A toilet bowl brush will need to be used fairly frequently to keep the back of the bowl looking decent. I paid $219 (plus tax) for the Toto Ultimate at Granite Expo in Emeryville, Calif. It comes with its own toilet seat that is a little strange in that it has mechanism that cause it to lower very slowly when move it part way down.
There was a fairly lengthy discussion of toilets not too long ago, you may want to do a search on "toilets" or "Toto" if you want to read more than you get in this thread.

I recommend the A.S. Champion. Cheap - and it flushed like there is a black hole under your house.

A.S. Champion toilets
now that's funny.
to the OP, I've got Totos although they don't meet the criteria of being inexpensive they sure do work good.
I think that Toto has an inexpensive basic model. A plumber friend of mine got me one 2 years ago fro $115.00. I put it in one of my rental units. I just bought another rental and that is what I am going to put in this one.
