well …
plumbing tools aside … I think Ridgid finally found a tool they can make … just like Craftsman!
Got the portable Ridgid shop vac for xmas …
4 gal 5 hp … came with a “mounting rack” I’ll move around a million times before I throw it away …
but … the vac itself … is great.
I saw my fireplace guy use it before … figured if it was good enough for brick dust …
so Santa brought me one.
Now I have the full vac compliment … the Fein for hooking up to the chop and table saw … the big Craftsman for heavy remodeling/demo work …
and this one hand carry portable deal for daily use.
Have a buddy with the battery DeWalt … was tempted … for the convience … but common sense prevailed and I went for this one with twice as much power.
The beast part … aside from it actually sucking big hunks of debris up …
is the “reach” … it has a 20 ft cord … and … a 14 ft hose.
there’s also a 7ft “extension hose” still in the box with the mounting rack … but that diameter is too small for my uses.
They also designed a cord wrap that pretty much works … and there’s a round hole to tuck the loose hose end into after ya wrap it around the body a coupla times.
It’s first job was to clean up after disassembling old double hung windows in a big old attic …. 7 windows … 3 different rooms ….
I only had to use 2 plugs. Plugged it into to the central location … and it’s 34 ft reach made it everywhere I had to go. Same deal in the back room … plugged in once … and it reached from one end to the other.
It’ll be great for doing kitchens for box and drawer clean out. That’s the main reason I wanted a hand carry vac. I’ll even be able to use that extra 7 ft flex hose they sent along there …
my fireplace guy said he liked it because it ran great until it was packed full …
I haven’t beat on it yet … but so far so good.
it’s a keeper.

How loud is it? I got a Genie a while back and I'm quite proud of the fact that I couldn't possibly have bought a louder one. HOLY CRAP! I realize that rushing air makes noise, but it's a vacuum, not a jet plane. They could have done something about the db level. I got the Rigid muffler and it helps, but if I use it on a job, OSHA is gonna have a field day unless I hand out earplugs to everyone. One of these days, I'll borrow a meter and measure the SPL.
not bad at all ...
actually for the suction ... pretty good.
I took an ear splitting Craftsman back to exchange for the one that's been rattling in the back of the van for a good number of years now ...
I do remodeling .... half the time someone's there when I'm working ...
I look for "quiet" vacs and compressors!
This one qualifies.

I purchased this same vacuum for my remodeling jobs where the bigger one was overkill. This portable unit is outstanding and I now have several: One mounted on the base of my bandsaw connected to the dust port. Another into the back of my Makita 10" Slider, and yet another under my Lathe.
Using the Level 2 high performance filter. Stopped short of Anti-Microbial... that seemed a bit much.
The rubber flex hose is better than the hard plastic one. Do they sell that separately?
AFAIK the Ridgid vacs are still made by Emerson who still makes the Craftsman brands.
there ya go!
it is made my Emerson ... didn't know they made the Craftsman.
Guess Emerson really sucks?
in a good way ....

IIRC Emerson has made all the Craftsman vacs. When your big C'man goes out replace it with the Ridgid, they have ( or at least last time I looked) a lifetime warranty. For some reason they seems quieter, probably some spec difference. The Craftsman does not have a lifetime wararanty.
I have one of the "mufflers" that came with one of the many Craftsman vacs here and I use it on the small 9 gal Ridgid with a sock placed over it. The muffler looks like a gutter strainer sort of thing. Another way to quieten the outflow is to put one of the hoses on it with a sock (sweat sock, prefferably washed). Can't help the motor noise but does help overall.
What's the model #?
yer lucky the box is still in my way here ...
SG4000.

I looked at rigid site and couldn't find it this AM. Sounds like a good unit and the long hose sounds good.
So now I can get ready to spend. Thanks
Ok, this has been ongoing for a while so I figure I will join in. I have had the Rigid porto for almost a year. I was so psyched to get a vac. I like a ton of the features but since I bought it, I have become lead certified, so now I need a Hepa rated one.
I love the extra long cord... dont need an extension most of the time.
Lots of suction, carries well, and has a 2 stage filter system. Its strong enough that I think Im going to add a 3rd stage of my own.
Im not sure if there is a new model, but I was disappointed that I had to spend an extra 26 bucks to get some heads for the thing. The vac comparatively wasnt cheap as it was. Then when I got the attachment set, there was no bristle head. Its amazing what we realize we need when we are without.
I also wish it had wheels. I drag mine around but thats weird, especially when Im on someone elses hardwood floors. Im going to have to go out and spend more for a dolly thing and strap that on, by the time Im done spending, I could have bought a hepa rated vacuum.
geez.
I didnt get a rac either!
ok Im grumpy about it, but I like it. :)

Do they have a filter for it that will allow you to vac fine dust without blowing it out the back?
Yes. They have three various degrees of filters for these. I got one about two weeks ago and have been using it for drywall dust in addition to larger debris.
I wouldn't say it's "quiet" but it's not nearly as whiny sounding as my 16 gal craftsman. It comes with the Rigid muffler already on it.
Haven't installed the wall rack yet, but I agree with all other posatives listed so far.
Reach is very good, cord is long, vac unit is light, and I'm satisfied with the suction to date. Haven't filled it yet but I've got to be getting close, still has strong suction though.
Wife has used as well, she's loves the extension wands with the suction brush for getting cobwebs and "dusting" places that used to need a ladder.
I have a rigid 12 gal (I think) and its great. Everyone comments on how quiet it is. Its quite powerful too. The wheels fall off occasionally but other than that....

This is the vac we are talking about, the other number may be from the store that sold it.

Did he say he got it at the Home Depot, I wonder if its just a new model, and mine was the first round? I think I could have bought the long hose separately, but it may come with it now not sure, sorry for the confusion.

Ahhhhh i've got it figured out now. I found that one at the rigid site but then I finnaly found the sg 4000 at the Home despot site.http://www.homedepot.com/cmc_upload/HDUS/EN_US/asset/images/eplus/648846002873_2.jpg
Also while hunting around at the sears site I found 20' 2+1/2" hoses. For pretty cheap, that was last nite I'll have to go back and check. I think like 18 or ?
I happened to swing into HD today, and that is the upgrade, mine is the first string they must have been working out the details.
anywho, now I need one of those bristle attachments.
lol

Up date on the sg4000 got it used it, sound level was a big improvement over the screamers/craftsman/Emerson/rigid. The power was Ok but not great, but the filter is good and it does go awhile before not pulling good. And you can drop- tap tap the canister against the floor to free it up for more, after turning it off. Also the biggie that I wasn't aware of is that the 2+1/4" hoses and attachments fit in it so you don't need all different vac hoses and stuff if you have the older bigger setup. Plus I think it makes it pull a lot better then the smaller hoses. For site cleanup the smaller hoses are ok but I think I'll use the bigger hoses on most of the clean up. The other thing that looked good but were a little hard on the fingers are the case release latches, they stick just enough to kind of irritate the fingers as you apply enough pressure to release them it drives your fingers into the case. the thought of the life time warrantee sounds good The sound level was such a improvement I know Ill grab that one first, and if that's the case what to do with the 5 other screamers.
