I’m unloading my tools from the company truck before the holiday. Christmas Eve 2 yrs. ago the shop was broke into and off went the tools[homeowner’s did not cover them!] So out comes the stonemason’s bag, the 5 gallon bucket with a tool insert and lid, the tool belt and bags, and a rubbermaid box with power tools, a couple of hunnert pounds of stuff and I’m trying to figure out when I started bringing all this stuff to work. I needed a hand jack the other day and asked the boss where one was at and he wanted to know where mine was…. at home where about half this stuff is gonna stay, yet I betcha by Christmas I’ll be doing all aqain. Somewhere the guys I worked for stop providing stuff and the tool slut in me came to a crossroads and I’m not sure there is a going back. Thanks

You know, that thing that looks like a fork lift but you push it around manually.
It only raises about 4 to 6 inches. Similar to a roll around jack that mechanics use.
Ok, pallet jack..in my speak..GreenCu has an ele. one pretty cool.Thanks.

Well, what I was looking for was a sledge hammer. I'm guessing it was derived from hand jack hammer and this isn't the first time I've gotten quizzed, my boss knew what I wanted he just didn't have one. Probably one of those regional terms.
and your language of origin issssssssssssssss??????????????????
LOL..me thinks a palletjack..boy would you be hosed if ya asked for one..lol

I am completely admonished and shall no longer speak in colloquial terms, I probably learned language skills the same way as most of us. To recieve food, warmth, and get that stinky stuff out of my diaper. I later honed my skills trying to compete for love and sex. My mother spoke Spanglish, my dad, whatever it took to get her to provide some of the previously mentioned items. This has led to much confusion causing me to get food instead of sex and long periods of time stewing in stinky stuff.I have no idea why I call a small sledge hammer a hand jack. But with enough grunting and pointing and pantomiming I usually get what I need, but sometimes I get food instead.Peace

Oh, my goodness pye,
I haven't seen nor read such a piece of ( almost?) poetry on BT for years.
Thank you.
PS What ever happened to Clay(?) Remember his stuff around the time of 9-11?
Seemed to disappear with the intro. of Prospero

"PS What ever happened to Clay(?)"Yeah, I think of him every so often. He posted some good stuff and he brought a distinctive voice to Breaktime.Rich BeckmanOf course there's a problem, people are involved!
Yup, Clay could paint a picture with words.
Yeah, I have the same problem with communications ... lots of food and tv but little sex ... you suppose age has anything to do with it?

Pye,Kudos on the free verse. I have heard a hand sledge called a hand jack, and was under the impression that the term harkens back to the days (1800's) of building railways by hand, and to mining terminology, too. Used to power a star drill held in the other hand. Makes me appreciate the electric rotohammer to think of the way we used to drill holes in rock.Bill
Everybody needs to spend a day setting anchors with a hand jack and a rock drill... I think you are under appreciated if you have done this for even one bolt.
I think we should have a retroday at work; star bits in hand holders, yankee screwdrivers, rip saws.
We'll make that yankee workshop guy look like robocarpenter.
Not sure where you guys are from to say it’s a regional thing but I too have, at a period in time, called a hand sledge a hand jack.
Had one guy on our crew many years ago that called it a single jack, anybody else hear that one?Scott R.
yep, a single jack cuz it was a one hander- a full size sledge was a double jack
hand jack, never heard , but single jack is what i know them to be
james
A friend of mine calls a three pound sledge a half jack. That was new to me.Language is my second language.
Star drilling, yankee screwdriving, hand miter box. Went to a tool sale the other day and two of them were sitting there (miterboxes); my buddy asked if I was going to buy one; "Nope!!! used one way too long to go back".
Just seeing the words "star drill" in print makes my shoulder hurt.Language is my second language.
I think the reason I got "elected" to use that set-up was age...I was the youngest guy there so it became my job. Gassing cars had a lot more appeal and paid better in Oklahoma. Then I returned to Texas and the situation reversed itself again, so it was back to trimming houses until I got a job at the manned space craft center. I tried to get into the electrical union but they were only taking relatives of people already there so I sold industrial supplies until the company Enronned 25 years later. Then it was on to teaching school and repairing houses evenings and w/es. I still only make about half of what I did selling but those days are gone so I just do the best I can to get by. I do a lot of painting which I hate, and more repairing than I ever wanted to do. Summer before last I roofed one house. 38 years between roofing jobs plus a site where I had to carry every bundle up by hand cured me of wanting to do that so I grabbed some better paint removal tools and went back to swabbing on paint. Life comes full circle so to speak once again. The teaching supplies fair insurance benefits but I am too old to have much retirement income from that so I keep climbing ladders. My shoulders ache right now from spinning that sander and then applying the first coat of primer today. I repaired some sheetrock and showed the BIL how to tape and float (and I do not know much more than he did) but it turned out okay.

I call them BFH and little BFH.

Just another day in paradise
I've often heard single jack, but never double jack.
I have been thinking about that same thing myself lately. It's a treat to have your own tools because you never have to worry about it being in good condition or where it's located. But the stuff adds up, and quickly too. And what are you supposed to do if your boss buys tools that you don't particularly care for?I'd be curious to hear what business owners expect of their employee carpenters in terms of tools.
Yeah, I've heard a sledge called a hand jack before, but he wanted an 4? pounder with an 18"? handle, not a full on sledge.
