Totally Open Pier-and-beam Foundation
I bought a small, old, long abandoned house in need of a “to the studs” renovation with a crawl space that runs 1-3 feet high, and partially filled in between the piers with unmortared blocks. There are no problems with mold, bugs, or moisture. The skin is concrete stucco over chicken wire that runs slightly below grade. The bones, structure, and metal roof of this cottage are sound. The previous owner removed most of the flooring and sub-flooring for reasons unknown for me. The piers are fine and installed below the frostline, and the beams are keepers. This home is located in a windy valley in the southwest Virginia mountains. Do I enclose this foundation or not? If so, how?
