I am trimming out our renovated house with a traditional baseboard. I am using a 1 x. 6 bottom board with an 1 1/2″ cap moulding all out of red oak. I have three questions: 1.Should I glue the cap moulding to the bottom base board, or should I just nail it to the studs and let it “float”? 2.If these two pieces are in dependant, should I break their joints at the same place or keep them staggered? 3.I have a couple of uncles who have are very experienced and whose opinions I respect a lot, and they told me to hold the base board 3/8″ to 1/2″ off the floor to allow the carpet to be tucked under the baseboard, because it gives the carpet a better installation because the ends are always hidden, and you will never catch a frayed end in the vacuum cleaner. To make matters worse, my neighbor said to install the baseboard after the carpet, because the installers always scuff up the finish when installing the carpet. This would end up with essentially the same end products that my uncles prefer. All opinions will be appreciated!
