I,m trying to install a tray ceiling in our foyer , but I’m running into trouble trying to make the corners. I’m not getting the right angles. I’m using 38 degrees for the angle. Can someone help me?

38°, is that what you are using for the common rafters?
Yes Sir 38 degrees is the common rafters that I'm using.

Then your hips/corners will be 28.92° or 29°.Joe Carola
May I ask how you figured out the angle?
May I ask how you figured out the angle?
He said that he was using a 38° angle for the commons and probably scribing it with a speedsquare. 38° is roughly 9-3/8/12 pitch. I used my Construction Master Calculator. There are many ways to do it.
If he wants to just work in degrees, he can do this.
38 [Pit] [Pit] [=] [Rise] [Hip] [Hip] = 28.92°
That took 5 seconds.
But, he doesn't even have to do any math when using the speedsquare. He has his speedsquare set at 38°. Look at the commonnumbers on the speedsquare and it reads roughly 9-3/8".
So now you know that the speedsquare tells you that the pitch is 9-3/8".So now just set the hip part of the speedsquare at 9-3/8" and that's your hip angle plumbcuts.
If he wants to use a framing square and the hips are running at 45°, all he has to do is this.
38 [Pit] [Pit] = 9-3/8" (9-3/8 over 12 on Framing Square for Common Rafters)
Now, all you do is just hold 9-/38" over 17 for the hips.
Hope this makes sense.
