trim windows which are proud of rock?
I’m helping the homeowner finish his basement and he wants to avoid as much as possible having the windows set “into a tunnel” as he would say. The foundation walls go up about 50″ and the pony walls for the rest of the house are built on top of them, leaving a 2″ concrete ledge. We are going to frame 2×4 walls in front of the concrete, and then step back and use the existing framing in the pony walls. We are framing the 2×4 walls with a 2×6 top plate which covers up the top of the concrete ledge.
So far, so good. The problem we are facing is that the windows. They were recently replaced with vinyl windows, and are set into the pony wall portion of the wall. The thing is, they are proud or even with the framing. When we rock the wall, there is no place for jamb extensions, and I’m wondering how we are going to cut or attach the casing. Normally, we’d have jamb extensions level with the sheetrock, and nail the casing to both, but now I have a raw sheetrock edge to deal with.
I asked the HO what he had imagined for trim and the answer I got was “I hadn’t gotten that far.” Well we all know that day is coming.
Any ideas on how to do the trim without jamb extensions and cover the raw edge of the rock

I can't figure why you can't put jam extensions on them. You have a 3/4" edge of the jam that need to be brought out a 1/2" more or less. So rip some stock and glue/nail it to the edge of the jam.
Does that make sense?
Vinyl J-channel to the vinyl window frames, insert drywall returns to the face of the interior drywall plane, add corner bead and mud. No casings needed
If you wish to have a wide ledge at the sill then install a wide stool of your choice of materials (wood, plywood' formica, cultured stone, ceramic, etc.) and include a tongue left and right, then an apron.
Clear as mud??!

When you say "proud" of the framing, are you talking proud on the outside of framing or the inside of framing"
I'm assuming that you are saying proud on the outside because I've never seen a vinyl window with a wide 5" jamb.
You will have that tunnel. It will be wood or it will be drywall, but it will be a tunnel.
