This may be a really stupid question, but I need to cut down some doors due to a recarpeting project and I can’t remember if I need to taper the bottom of the door with the taper toward the door-closing direction or toward the door-opening direction? Some help please from all those finish carpenters out there.

I wouldn't bother tapering the bottom of the door at all,
especially if both sides of the door are carpeted. It's the
vertical edge of the door on the lock side that would need a
slight bevel, typically, but on the bottom of the door, you
probably won't need it beveled. If you did, it would be
toward the closing side (stands up to common sense)
*Dan,I'm with Mad Dog. Personally I have never beveled the bottom of a door nor have I seen it done. By the way, I don't think that asking any question to gain knowledge could ever be thought of as stupid. Keep asking and keep learning.Ed. Williams
