I feel safe in guessing that there are some opinions out there whether it is an OK thing to try to create a rough plaster-like texture (skip-troweling, I think it might be called) – using all purpose joint compound. my impression is that this is sort of effect is usually created with “real” plaster.
for me the upside of mud is a ready to apply material that I have on hand.

We do it all the time, Use lightweight mud to save your arms. We add silica sand for a plaster look. About a cup to a box of mud. It also breaks the suction from the trowel and makes it pull away less.
