Truck Toolbox Pics and Advice

gillisonconstruction | Posted in Tools for Home Building on December 25, 2008 06:56am

Hey guys hope your all having a great christmas.  I am planning to change my short- bed Chevrolet truck to the new Weather Guard  Top Side Boxes.  They are 18″ tall and 16″ deep it seems perfect for what I want in he truck with me.  RIght now I have the front crossover box and the two side boxes and it takes up to much bedspace.  I carry all the big stuff in the trailer just looking for a better way to carry some other tools I carry in the truck and still be able to haul a load of trash or go grab a dozen sheets of rock.  Well just wondering if anybody had this current set up and some pics of it.

I had a shortbed with boxes once. It was basically a glorified wheelbarrow. ;-)

Handled pretty good for a truck though.

I like crossbed boxes. They never charge me for any junk I can stuff under the box. I can reach right in to the rest of the bed and remove tools and supplies without climbing into the bed.

I had a full size truck set up with side boxes and a ladder rack I made.

The side boxes were set up so the back of the box did not protrude past the wheelwells- I maintained 52" between the side boxes. Box support was provided by bolting the boxes to the ladder rack- the factory box supports that go to the truck bed were not used. The bottom of the aluminum boxes were lined with 3/4" plywood.

The additional distance between the side boxes pushed the front away from the shiny side of the truck, which was a good side benefit.

    No pics, though.

Well...this prolly' won't help ya with yer PU but just for some inspiration I'll toss it into the mix. http://picasaweb.google.com/andybuildz/TrickedMyTruckOut?feat=directlink

                                             ***slide show works the best***

It actually holds an enormous amt of my tools. More then I really ever expected.

I used all left over materials from the work I did on my own house...mahogany 5/4 decking...some fancy crown left overs...luan.... and some poplar I used to make some doors for a closet in my bathroom. the only thing I bought was some cheap rubber/vinyl? matting in a roll from HD....as bed liner. Even made my own green stain.

Doesn't take up all that much space being it just goes over the wheel wells from the very back right up to behind my drivers seat. Even hooked myself up with a mahogany sort of file wall right behind the seat that caps the end of the cabs...I throw all my receipts and pads and maps n laptop n Playboys...lol....in there.

People said to me it won't be long b/4 I wreck it with building materials I thow into the bed.

What it's done actually has kept me from being a slob back there. I actually pay attention to what I "place" back there now. I even keep a 1/2 sheet (2x8)of 1/4" luan on the floor that I lift up in front of the cabs to protect the faces if I have to load the van up high with skids of stuff or whatever...like last week i had two big skids of tile.

Anyway....it's just nice having something that looks nice back there and my customers have always given me compliments when they happen to see em'.

Sorta says sumpin' about how much you care.
