Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had a good video or related links to installing a tv mount onto a stone fireplace. Due to the stone you aren’t able to have the mount 100% level, so I was think about using boards. Another issue is that it might be difficult or impossible because of the stone, durock, and plywood backer. If I cant find any studs I will be using anchors and want to make sure that will be a good alternative. Thank you for any advice.

It depends upon the thickness of stone. If they are not that thick long toggle bolts installed behind ply and durock are not going anywhere. Just make sure you get the heavy duty rated toggle bolts and do not over tighten them. To make the mount lay flat against the wall you will need to use tubing which slides over toggle screws to act as shims. I spray paint the tubing beforehand to match finish of the mounting plate. If it’s really thick stone need to have wood or metal mounts installed into the brick (requires removal of a few stones). The other option with large stone is to recess the TV in the stone which requires a lot of work. I’ve done it all ways. Hopefully you have a thinner stone that will allow for toggle bolts.
Yep, it varies a lot depending on the nature of the stone. It could be a thin veneer, glued onto a durock backer, a "classical" veneer, several inches thick and resting on some sort of foundation, or all-out stone, either stone all the way through or transitioning to concrete block.
