I just finished a bathroom for HO he has now asked me to tile a small section of an exterior pressure treated deck approx 3′ x 10′ the tile he wants to use are 18″ x 18″x 3/8″ what underlayment and thinset would be best
Question # 2
The HO also wants his glass sun room tiled with the same tile the room is approx 12′ x 15′ There is a tile floor existing but he wants to put the new over the old I know it can be done I also went to local tile supply for advice on these 2 ?? after a half hour of going round & round with a lot of maybe or possibly you could I left no better off then before I asked these questions so any help would be appreciated.
This home is in Rhode Island. Also this deck & sun room are on the second floor of the home all structures are sound and the deck is painted. This entire home was built with pressure treated approx 20 years ago. Any other info I can give please let me know
Thanks in advance

I don't think there is any way to get a satisfactory job installing 18 x 18 x 3/8 tiles on a treated deck. Try to talk him into thin brick or something smaller that can handle the movement of the wood. Substrate would be hardi backer with a ditra type membrane over it and the thin set the thin brick directly to the membrane.
the sunroom should be no problem. Just use a good thinset directly over the old tile, maybe run an angle grinder with course grit over it to rough it up but you should be good there.

No luck he already bought tiles and his DW is interior decorator so my chances were slim and none and Slim left town. I've been searching the net without much success. I will figure something out for that part or do it just the way it was done before per the HO.
As to the sunroom I found the same advice on John Bridge so I will take that course for the sunroom checked another tile supply same as your advice said to use Superflex thin-set or 3 to 1 morter and give it a few days before grouting
Thanks again for the advice

As to the deck, I have difficulty understanding why he wants to do this small portion of the deck.
You may want to consider creating a small area bordered by 2x with plywood and a membrane applied over the decking and tile over that.
As for the sunroom, any GOOD latex modified thinset should do the tric. Make sure the tile is clean and it may not hurt to run around the room with a belt sander and 60 grit.

thanks for the help the sunroom shouldn't be a problem what you advise seems to be the way to go .As to the tile on the deck where this area is the deck steps down to where you enter the sunroom it is bordered by a walkway on one side and the house on the other it is only 1" below the walkway so I'm limited as to what I can do. Can't have the tiles higher then the walk or the treshold see my crude drawing below
For the sunroom I think I found a membrane called "easy mat" of all places at Hopeless Depot they were kind enough to break the package as they didn't know much about itallthe specs were printed behind the large label on it
Thanks again hope the drawing makes sense

I've seen the easy mat in magazines...........a new competitior to Schluter Kerdi.
I'm lost on the deck thing though. Freeze? Drainage? Slap some plywood and a membrane and tile away. Do it at the right time of the year and you might get away with a one year gaurantee.[email protected]

Deck & sunroom are on 2nd level of the house there's a screen room below nothing in it so they don't worry about any water that does goes thru . I don't get it myself but like it says "mine is not to reason why"
I have it in writing and signed off so we're all clear. That's the way I'm going "easy mat" but no guarantees on the deck tiling, the sunroom is a one year
Thanks again
