When I have to cover a load in my PU with a tarp so the load won’t get wet I end up with the rope tied around the bumper and the lower edge of the bed. seems like there should be a better way.
any ideas>

I always use bungies, one or preferably two hooked through each grommet running to bumper, hooks, or the bottom edge of the sheet metal sides.
FYI, I once had a pickup that I did this a lot with and I soon learned that the wind jiggles the tarp enough to eventually abrade the paint. If you need to cover loads often consider buying a canopy.

It depends on what the load is.. often the best way is to tuck the front edge of the tarp under the load lay the tarp over the load and using the tied rock technique if there aren't grommets where you need them tie the sides down then tuck the back edge underneath and tie it to the sides.. another words you use the load it'self to hold the tarp down..
Buy a van.
Problem solved. Nothing gets wet.
Throw one of these on top of the tarp:

One item that might help is the Rhino tarp clip from Lee valley tools

It also works great on boat that need to be tarped. Just fill plastic jugs with water and suspend them where you need them.

hold down hooks mounted to the PU bed and use a diamond hold down with the line of yur choice...
