Is it okay to put tyvek up on the house over Tar paper. Homeowner stripped the siding off himself(to save money)and left the paper on everywhere. I planned on tyvek on all siding before putting up the vinyl siding. I just want to make sure it won’t cause any problems. Thanks.

Michael,Like Joe H. said in another post, "this will probably start a food fight," but in my opinion you don't need the tyvek at all if the felt paper is in good shape. Patch any tares and put up your siding.
There was a good article in FHB about Tyvek vs. felt paper. There was also a good dicussion here about the merits of both. I'm not sure anyone ever converts a believer in one or the other products, but it looked like felt paper got more possitive support here than tyvek.
Search the archives and decied for yourself.

*tear off the tar paper, tyveck/tape seams bithuthane around windows 6" strip, and any electrical boxes that break the "skin" of the house, fill any air leaks or voids with foam do your sideing clean and tight go home knowing you will never get a callback for a leak or a draft. this has been mike"the stick"smith wolf creek colorado talking to ya,have a good one.
*Come on guys , he wants to know if using both will cause problems.
*I vote "no problem".In fact, after the owner power washes his house in a few years and the soap attacks the Tyvec he'll still have the tar paper underneath to protect his sheathing! Our you could save time and just repair the tar paper that's there and forget about the Tyvec.
*I'd probably spend the 1/2 hour it would take to remove the existing paper and put up new, either tyvec or tar paper. You know the owner put plenty of tears in it, and it gets brittle as it gets old so why not just tear off the old. Don't worry about getting every little nail/staple and scrap, though. It's only siding.Mike
