A client has asked me to build him a u shaped winder stair to save space over a regular stair case. I’m comfortable with how to, but I’m curious if there are people out there who have any strong dislikes for them. It seems I have heard them derided before, but it’s such a vague feeling I could be remembering a bit of indigestion.

as long as they never have to lugg a washer and dryer up and down it!
Lived in a place with U-shaped stair and it was very nice to have a kind of a landing at the middle, but getting around that corner with heavy stuff was hard.
Put a sky light above it and you almost don't have to turn on the light at night when the moon is out.
*I have 3 1/2 flights of stairs with 2 landings. But one is part of a hall so that does not count. As stairs they work fine, but I have not had move any large objects as I have direct outside access at two levels (hill side). If the landing will be on an outside wall it allows for some interesting treatment. I have seen several bungalow era houses that had boxed bays at the landing with a window seat and stained glass.
*By u shaped winder, do you mean with a landing, or do you mean with triangular shaped steps around the corner? I've lived with the latter and they are horrible. If you are sleepy and put your foot wrong, it makes it very easy to slip down the stairs. It is also horrible to move furniture up/down them because your footing is poor. With a landing is ok if the landing is sufficently large enough to be able to move furniture around the corner.Mary
