I am going to install a couple of prehing doors in my basement this coming week, and I wanted to ask a basic question. I just measure across the wall (from the hinge side) to a level mark on the other side & measured down. My hinge side is 3/16″ lower than strike side. The question (cause I always mix these things up) is: to accomodate the difference, I think I need to either:
1. Cut the hinge side jamb lower by 3/16″, or
2. Shim the strike side 3/16″ higher.
Or do I have this reversed?
Thanks,

What kind of flooring will be under the door? If there will only be carpet, you are safe to shim the low side up to accommodate. If the finished flooring is installed first, cut the hinge side down.
I always try to raise the door off the floor a tad to clear the carpet, anyway, so shimming 3/16 isn't a major deal.
Good Luck.

Hey Hook & Piffin,
Thanks for the response. The floor right now is a concrete slab (basement). I will put in a floor over it eventually (Dricore) with carpet. So I'll go with your suggestion & shim the low side (hinge) up.
Thanks!Bob

If you are raising the floor with dricote and carpet then I would shim up both sides todo two things.1 get the jamb away from the concrete--the jambs only have to get wet once to discolor 2 get the door up off the floor high enouhg to clear the carpet--cutting doors down is hard enough but if they are hollow core you are making a whole lot more work for yourself.Hook and Piffin are right on the ball--I just wish we would get more info up front and not have to go round and round with the Q and A sessions.
shim hinge side up 3/16"
