While the foundation of my house is being poured, I am considering a 8×12 root cellar. I’d pour the walls of the root cellar, and the roof must support 4 feet of earth. Without using pre-cast anything, how do I make the roof? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

why not just dig it to the surface and form the roof and pour it w/ the walls and then fill over it with dirt?
This way you have a combo root cellar and bomb shelter all in one.

The primitive way is to form it with a plywood deck supported by numerous posts. The sophisitcated way is to use any of a variety of corrugated steel decking that will span eight feet without requiring any intermediate support. Here are some previous threads.
